There is also some, albeit limited, evidence to suggest that styrene may cause cancer. When you buy a synthetic latex mattress, it is most likely made up of a combination of SBR and natural latex. A 100% pure natural latex mattress, on the other hand, is made up of 0% SBR and 100% natural latex. When new, a synthetic latex mattress may feel like a natural latex mattress at first. This, unfortunately, enables sellers to wrongly market a synthetic latex mattress as a natural latex mattress. If you have a strong sense of smell, you can identify synthetic latex by its strong and caustic odour. A synthetic latex mattress is also far less durable than a natural latex mattress.

Ideally, only a mattress made exclusively and solely with 100% pure natural latex should be termed as a natural latex mattress. In practise, however, most companies use creative means to pass off an SBR-latex blended mattress as natural latex mattresses by cleverly but deceptively omitting the crucial fact that it is not wholly natural latex.

A rubber tree has to be grown for several years before its bark can be tapped for latex, which is a milky white substance, and each tree can be easily harvested for over 20 years. This process does not kill the tree or cause rampant deforestation. It is after 20 years of harvesting that the rubber tree is chopped down, only to be replanted again. When compared with a synthetic latex mattress, a natural latex mattress has a mild odour and an uneven appearance.
